Hydrogen – An opportunity we need to grab with both hands

The recent announcement of the North East Scotland Hydrogen Ambition (NESH2A) will coordinate and strengthen action in the industry and ensure that the strong pipeline of planned hydrogen projects becomes a reality.

For decades, the North East has been an energy capital boasting an abundance of skills, resources, infrastructure, and an innovative mindset. It now leads the way in low carbon hydrogen generation and has already pioneered several high profile projects that could generate over 200MW of hydrogen.

NESH2A is committed to inject pace into the development and deployment of technology as we explore hydrogen as a viable resource in our net zero energy future.  The resources and skills available within the North East of Scotland make it extremely well placed to maintain its position as a leading energy capital. The Net Zero Technology Centre is currently working on various projects  as part of our Net Zero Technology Transition Programme (NZTTP) to provide further evidence to support hydrogen in its critical role in the renewable energy economy.

The North East Scotland Hydrogen Ambition (NESH2A) aims to establish the UK’s first Hydrogen Hub putting the region once again at the forefront of hydrogen production, providing secure energy supply domestically to power transport, homes, and industries. However, North East Scotland is not alone in identifying the hydrogen opportunity within the UK. The practical guidance and support provided by the North East Scotland Hydrogen Ambition committee will help the North East maintain its lead in the industry, accelerate the development and deployment of new technologies, strengthen the hydrogen economy and take advantage of the opportunity on the journey to achieving net zero.

The North East of Scotland has the potential to contribute over 20% to the UK’s low carbon hydrogen production target of 5GW by 2030 and will deliver energy globally as it establishes itself as a prime exporter – there is a huge opportunity here and we need to grab it with both hands.
