Digital Twin and inspection using laser scanning
Industry context
Digital worker technology, such as the use of tablets for work planning, direct data entry and inspection reporting, is slowly being adopted throughout the industry. Current systems rely on traditional reporting methods such as check-lists, anomaly categories, condition descriptions and photographs. The subjective nature of the inspector’s judgement and time-consuming process of reviewing the disjointed data can also lead to errors and inconsistencies. The cost and risk of accessing certain areas can also be significant.
Project overview
The project aimed to develop a revolutionary visual inspection system that can rapidly obtain accurate inspection data, automatically detect and categorise defects and generate virtual inspection reports.
GDi developed a scanner that can provide auto defect detection for any surface breakdown flaw (coating breakdown, corrosion, pitting and cracking) on scanned equipment.
The system can link to external systems such as WorkManagement Systems and external anomaly andinspection databases. The optional functionality allowsusers to:
- Rapidly gather data
- Detect and quantify defects
- Combine inspection and reporting
- Generate virtual inspection reports
- Utilise telescopic tripod and underdeck solution the tool will reduce the reliance on scaffolding and rope access
- Link to external systems for equipment registers and associated details – allowing selection
- Overlay data to allow a comparison of results over time
