Applications Open for CUI Technology Testing Call

10 July 2023 2 minute read

The Non-Intrusive Inspection Field Trial Accelerator (NIIFTA) has today (Friday 6 July) launched a call to find innovative Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) solutions, offering technology developers the chance to test their technology in a real-world environment.

The Accelerator is seeking technologies that are field trial ready in the areas of CUI detection and monitoring. The selected technologies will be given the opportunity to field trial their equipment on an onshore terminal operated by one of the NIIFTA members, enabling demonstration of capability and further testing and development.

NIIFTA is a Technology Leadership Board initiative with Kellas Midstream as the industry lead and involves support and collaboration from the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) and the Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC).  Launched in 2022 NIIFTA aims to accelerate piloting and testing of non-intrusive inspection technologies more quickly and at lower cost and risk compared to offshore.  NIIFTA currently comprises seven terminal operators offering access to twelve onshore sites.

Stefan Kent, Asset Support Manager, Kellas Midstream, said: “Kellas Midstream is proud to be the industry lead for this initiative and we very much appreciate the significant support from the NZTC, the NSTA and the other industry members to make it happen.”

Ernie Lamza, Technology Manager, NSTA, said: “This Technology Leadership Board initiative builds on the work of its Industry Sponsor Programme to break down barriers to technology deployment.  Cost sharing by terminal operators will enable more technologies to be trialled, more quickly, leading to real benefits for both technology developers and end users.”

David Cameron, Programme Manager – Industry Collab & New Projects, NZTC, said: “This technology innovation call is a great opportunity for developers to gain access to field trials which will bring their technologies closer to adoption in day-to-day operations.

“Reducing CUI is essential for the offshore industry to achieve net zero emissions and maintain high levels of safety, and such trials can help identify and facilitate the technologies that will help us achieve this.”
