Wells P&A ideas impress

07 July 2017
Our ‘Call for Ideas’ to transform well plug and abandonment has moved to the ‘develop’ stage, with 27 innovative ideas and concepts still in the running for a slice of c.£1 million investment.

A wide range of exciting ideas were submitted including:

  • Enhanced methods for testing barriers
  • Alternatives to cement barriers from self-sealing composites to metal alloys
  • New ways of placing barriers without having to pull casing
  • Novel methods of assessing the potential of hydrocarbon flow to surface

The innovators will be invited to work with the Oil & Gas Technology Centre to further develop their idea. A decision will then be made whether the idea will proceed to the ‘deliver’ stage, with the aim of technology field trials and commercialisation.

Malcolm Banks, Well Construction Solution Centre Manager, said: “The quality of ideas submitted was very impressive and made for a difficult selection process. It was encouraging to see such a variety of ideas and concepts that could transform well plug and abandonment for the oil and gas industry. We are excited to find out more about our innovators and their ideas in the coming months.”
