Monitoring Fluids and Corrosion Under Insulation

Project Summary

The aim of the project is to develop and validate a water/condensation and CUI-monitoring system for industrial applications. In order to accomplish these goals, the following objectives must be reached:
1. Redefine and certify existing prototype sensor (Sens-YD) for monitoring of condensation under/in insulation to comply with industrial environment (ATEX, EMC).
2. Develop and certify (ATEX, EMC) a new industrial sensor (CUI-YD) for monitoring corrosion under insulation.
3. Develop a data-analytic platform with machine learning algorithms for both sensors to be used in validation trial.
4. Validate the monitoring of both types of sensor (Sens-YD, CUI-YD) in a controlled test environment,

OUTCOMES

Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) poses a significant operational, safety and economic challenge. Since 1984, out of the 137 major oil and gas accidents reported within the EU over 20% have been associated with CUI.
It is currently estimated that CUI incurs 40 – 60% of the process plant maintenance costs within the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) and the value impact to the industry for the project would be in the region of £130M per annum to the UKCS.
