Use of heat from wells
Project summary:
Demonstrates the potential to decarbonise electrical power production on the Magnus Platform and other oil and gas operations in the United Kingdom Continental Shelf (UKCS).
The research assesses the potential of the Magnus offshore platform to convert heat energy from two sources. The first being the non-producing wells post-decommissioning that could be repurposed using the novel CeraPhiWell™ technology. Secondly the produced water stream where currently no heat recovery is used. These two heat sources are converted into clean electrical power using Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) generators.
The study investigates the following:
- Use of existing heat from the offshore facilities produced water stream for power or other applications
- Repurposing of existing low production or shut-in wells
- New co-produced wells to maximise potential of power generation from the principles of geothermal energy (heat)
- New closed loop CeraPhiWell(s) on offshore facilities and the potential power available from such wells
