The Net Zero Power Challenge
The “Net Zero Power Challenge” is a STEM resource created by the Net Zero Technology Centre.
In this hands-on activity, children are challenged to design a power system for a fictional island using only renewable technology.
This is a fun, educational activity that introduces children to:
- Seven different renewable energy technologies
- Scientific concepts such as “Energy”, “Power” and “Renewables”
- Some of the factors to consider when selecting the optimal technology for a region

The target age range is 9 to 12 years, but the activity may be adapted for younger or older children.
Contents of box
Each box contains all the materials needed for delivering a one-hour activity for three groups of pupils:
- 3 x game boards
- 3 x sets of tiles
- Blank worksheets
- 3 sets of Round 1 and Round 2 information sheets
- 3 x pupils’ guides
- 1 x teachers’ guide
The teachers’ guide contains detailed instructions on delivering the activity, teaching benchmarks, learning intentions, and success criteria. The one-hour activity also allows time for class discussion at the end of the activity. Recommended discussion points and suggestions for extension activities are listed in the teachers’ guide.
The pupils’ guide contains game instructions, descriptions of the renewable technologies featured, definitions of Energy and Power, and an overview of the challenges and complexities involved in transitioning to renewable energy.
