Latent Drive | Direct Seawater Electrolysis
Project Summary
Current solutions for offshore electrolyser installations require significant amounts of fresh water and depend on costly materials, which hinders scalability. Latent Drive’s SeaStack design is tailored for direct coupling with offshore wind farms, enabling efficient hydrogen production without the need for fresh water, desalination, or water purification.
The system’s compact, robust design is well-suited for installation offshore and at any coastal location. The electrolyser enhances low power efficiency and maximises energy capture during strong winds by reducing the balance of plant, making it a promising alternative for the UK to lead in green hydrogen production and compete with existing offshore solutions.
OUTCOMES
SeaStack is a direct seawater-to-hydrogen electrolyser, optimised for offshore installation, delivering over 85% efficiency. It has a wide operating range, capturing more wind energy at lower costs, making green hydrogen abundant and affordable.
The system has a novel cell architecture that splits seawater in two stages, allowing catalysts and electrodes to operate in a benign environment, an engineering solution that avoids traditional electrochemical problems, creating a route to industrial-scale seawater electrolysis.
