AFID Technology Innovation Showcase 2025
Winning developers presented at IRENA Innovation Week
In response to the urgent need to decarbonise the industrial sector, AFID in collaboration with NZTC launched at COP29 a global innovation competition to identify and accelerate the deployment of decarbonisation technologies nearing commercialisation.
Three winners in their respective categories, green hydrogen, bioenergy with CCUS and circularity, had the opportunity to present their technologies at the AFID Technology Innovation Showcase, part of IRENA Innovation Week 2025. The winners were selected from a global pool of over 30 applicants.
Responding to the decarbonisation imperative
Achieving net zero emissions by 2050 requires a fundamental transformation in how materials are produced and consumed, with digitalisation, circularity and emerging technologies in areas such as hydrogen and bioenergy playing a pivotal role. This competition responds to the urgent need to decarbonise the industrial sector, which accounts for a significant share of global CO2 emissions, particularly from hard-to-abate industries like iron and steel, cement, chemicals and aluminium.
According to IRENA, the transition to a low-carbon economy demands substantial investment and systemic shifts across all sectors, with the private sector leading the charge in adopting renewable energy and decarbonising operations. The technology showcase serves as a platform for innovation and industry collaboration, ensuring that businesses not only meet climate targets but also enhance their resilience and competitiveness in the evolving global landscape.
