ACUA Ocean

Plymouth based, ACUA Ocean joined TechX Cohort 5 with an ambitious vision to transform offshore monitoring through long‑endurance autonomous vessels. Since graduating, the company has rapidly evolved from an early‑stage TRL 4 startup into one of TechX’s strongest‑performing alumni, advancing its technology, expanding its team, and securing major commercial and strategic partnerships.

Over the past three years post TechX, ACUA Ocean has significantly accelerated its technical maturity, progressing to TRL 8 and achieving commercial readiness. This advancement has been validated through high‑profile contracts with the European Space Agency and the UK Ministry of Defence, demonstrating the reliability and capability of their autonomous systems in demanding offshore environments.

Commercially, the company has secured more than £7.5 million in combined grant and equity funding, including a landmark £4 million award through the Department for Transport’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition. Their revenues are growing internationally, and the team has expanded from fewer than five people pre‑TechX to 31 employees, with further growth planned as they scale operations and prepare for wider market deployment.

ACUA Ocean credits TechX as a pivotal catalyst in their growth, reflecting on their time in the programme by saying, “TechX provided a unique opportunity to network with both offshore renewables industry partners and other high‑potential startups. Those relationships continue to flourish three years later and have been a key part of our ongoing growth.” This foundation of collaboration and industry access has helped accelerate ACUA Ocean’s growth.

A key part of ACUA Ocean’s journey has been its strengthening relationship with the Port of Aberdeen and Plymouth Smart Sound, where the company has conducted trials, demonstrations, and operational planning for future autonomous deployments. This planned collaboration with offshore operators in Aberdeen  is helping shape the region’s emerging maritime autonomy ecosystem and positioning Aberdeen as a hub for next‑generation offshore innovation.

Today, ACUA Ocean is recognised as a leading UK SME in autonomous offshore systems, defence intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), and environmental and offshore wind monitoring. Their combination of deep‑tech engineering, high‑value partnerships, and growing international traction places them at the forefront of maritime autonomy and highlights the impact of TechX in accelerating world‑class offshore technology companies.
