Sentinel Subsea joined TechX Cohort 2 in 2019, as an Aberdeen based start-up developing a new approach to subsea integrity monitoring. Their passive chemical-mechanical based technology was designed to help offshore operators detect well and subsea infrastructure issues without the need for power, data connections or active intervention. This simple, robust technology offered a way to monitor subsea assets continuously and cost effectively, addressing a long standing challenge in offshore operations.

Through TechX, Sentinel Subsea gained direct access to operators and industry partners who could evaluate and deploy the technology in real world conditions.

TechX also played a role in strengthening investor confidence and discover business and early market acceptance for the technology. Shortly after completing the programme, Sentinel Subsea secured a seed investment round supported by regional and national funds, followed by additional seed and series funding in 2025. In total, the company has raised close to a million in equity investment, alongside £300,000 in public funding and in-kind operator support, (use of rig time, technical support and offshore deployment), which allowed us to trial our technology on a North Sea gas well, hence allowing the technical to achieve Technical Readiness Level 9. This gave confidence to the outer market of operators, allow a further 19 systems to be deployed in the Gulf of America, Australia, Brazil, the Caspian Sea, the Middle East and two further wells in the North Sea reflecting sustained belief in both the technology and the team’s ability to scale-up.

As the company matured, Sentinel Subsea grew from a small founding group of 3 founders, into a stable specialist team of 6 employees and counting with operations in the UK and partnerships overseas. Today, Sentinel Subsea stands as an example of how a local Aberdeen startup can use the support of TechX to access industry, accelerate technology adoption and build an internationally recognised offering. Their journey shows how early stage innovators can turn a promising idea into a proven offshore technology with global relevance.
